Last Saturday, October 19th, was a doubly special day for us.
Why?
Because we visited a winery for the first time, something that always excites us. And second, because of the inspiring story of resilience behind this project, worthy of a book, which we had the privilege of learning from its founders during our visit.
The winery in question is the young Cofradía de la Sierra, located in Sierra de Carapé, Maldonado, near Pueblo Edén, about 2.5 hours from Montevideo. The name "Cofradía de la Sierra" refers to a congregation of friends with a common goal: to make the best wine possible.
The individuals behind this project are Alejandro Chertkoff (the director), along with his wife, Stella Fernández (who also runs a merino wool project called Fina that offers handmade woven garments) and the winemaker, Fiorella Faggiani, was recently awarded Revelation Winemaker of the Year 2023 by the Descorchados magazine.
The land was acquired in 2020 and the first harvest took place in January 2023. The grape varieties they produce within their 5 hectares of vineyards are: Albariño, Petit Verdot, Tannat, Pinot Noir, and Merlot.
During our exclusive visit with Wine Explorers, we were warmly welcomed by Alejandro, Stella, and Fiorella. We toured the winery and vineyards, followed by an exquisite pairing lunch with a menu specially prepared for us in their newly opened restaurant.
The wines we tasted included Sauvignon Blanc Albariño, Merlot, and Tannat, all from the 2023 vintage. As an extra treat, we were the first to sample their freshly bottled 2024 Rosé!
It was truly one of those experiences we, as good explorers, love to have. It was a deeply special, authentic, and intimate visit, where we were surrounded by wonderful people, indulging in exquisite food and excellent wines.
What more could we ask for?
A huge thank you for the warm welcome; we all felt it deeply.
And, of course, infinite thanks to the multicultural group that accompanied us. None of this would have been possible without them.
Pure happiness!
