From April 14th to 19th, the Unión Española de Catadores de España held a new edition of the Bacchus contest, the oldest and most prestigious international wine competition in Spain, recognized by VINOFED (World Federation of Major International Wine and Spirits Competitions), the OIV (International Organization of Vine and Wine), and the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture.
Uruguay was represented by wineries from the regions of Montevideo, Maldonado, Canelones, San José, Colonia, Salto, and Paysandú, supported by INAVI (Uruguayan Institute of Viticulture) and with the representation of its Bacchus-appointed ambassador: Verónica González Carli, founder and director of
The jury was made up of 99 members from 30 nationalities who evaluated 1,981 wines from 18 countries.
It was four intense days where, in addition to tasting sessions, representatives from around the world enjoyed incredible master classes, lunches sponsored by the most important wineries in Spain, and dinners at exclusive restaurants, some of them with Michelin stars.
Undoubtedly, it was a very enriching event, with representatives from around the world, masters of wine, renowned sommeliers, prestigious oenologists, specialized journalists, and major wine importers.
They all gathered to evaluate wines completely blind, thus ensuring a transparent competition where the awarded wines receive their medals based on their own quality, regardless of their country of origin or other factors.
Bacchus is the most important Ibero-American showcase of the wine world, with Mexico, Bolivia, Brazil, Uruguay, Peru, Portugal, Argentina, and Chile as the undisputed protagonists of its top medals.
In this edition, Uruguay achieved its best result in the 22-year history of the contest, with 9 award-winning wineries and 14 medals including gold and silver, as well as one Grand Gold medal.
