This past Saturday, June 8th, we celebrated one of the year's most notable events: “Tannat and Lamb.” This pairing is a classic in Uruguay, featuring the traditional flavors of our signature grape variety and one of the best accompaniments, lamb in all its variations.
The event took place at Bodega Marichal, a family-run winery that we love, boasting four generations of history. Our last visit was in 2019, so we were eagerly looking forward to returning!
We were welcomed by Juan Andrés Marichal, the winery's winemaker and a third-generation family member. Together with him, we enjoyed a guided tour of the winery and the family estate.
Afterward, we savored a pairing lunch where we enjoyed lamb in various preparations, paired with Tannat wines from different lines, vintages, and processes, including a vertical tasting of their Tannat Wine Spectator Top 100.
Wine Spectator published the “Top 100” list, and their 2018 Tannat Marichal was chosen among the best 100 wines of the year, out of 15,000 wines evaluated from over 60 wine regions worldwide. With its 90 points, it ranked #61 in the Top 100 Wine Spectator 2020, being one of the seven South American wines and the only Uruguayan wine on the list.
During our visit, we had the privilege of tasting the last available bottles and purchasing some to take home.
In addition to the beautiful autumn day that allowed us to fully enjoy the vineyards and have an outdoor lunch, we were joined by a wonderful group from different parts of the world, as is usual in our events.
Thanks a lot to the incredible team at Bodega Marichal for welcoming us with such warmth and attention to detail; it was truly excellent service.
And of course, infinite thanks to everyone who joined us with their wonderful energy, making it a truly unforgettable day.
